Former Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi said he "immediately felt as if he lost a friend", upon news of Mr Nathan's death. Speaking to Channel NewsAsia, he said: "Mr Nathan, he is a good friend. I've known him for a very long time. Many people see him as a person who's very helpful," he said. "He was good to the Malaysians and very good to the Singaporeans. He was good to all. That's what I liked about him. He was not trying to show how proud he was, he was a good person, very humble person."

The British High Commissioner to Singapore Scott Wightman said Mr Nathan "served Singapore and its people selflessly". He added: "I offer my deepest sympathy to his family and to the country."
